To most readers of poetry, Math/Infinity probably begins with an enigma. Dotoli does not claim that Math is equivalent to Infinity, because his title would simply have read Math = Infinity; neither does he venture that Math is roughly similar to Infinity, because Math ≃ Infinity would then have been the symbolic logic. Instead, the poet offers that Math is congruent with Infinity. But what exactly does “congruent” mean, and more importantly perhaps, what does it come to mean in a book that does not make one single use of the word throughout its entire text?
