The Mont Of Domme - Royal Walled Town in Perigord -Although the site of Domme has yielded many prehistoric remains, its history, properly speaking, begins with the construction, in the 11th or 12th century, of a fortified castle at the western end of the rock. In 1214, Simon de Montfort, heading the Albigensian Crusade, arrived at the foot of this castle ; as is told by his contemporary, Pierre des Vaux de Cernay, the castle "occupied a strong position on a promontory overlooking the valley of the Dordogne. It was empty and undefended.
