Although the Chapter of the foundation of Fontgaufier Abbey dates the origins of Castelnaud back to 1095 in the surge of "new castle" built in the XIth century, it was not until 1214 that military history mentions it. During one of Simon de Montfort's expeditions to the northern limits of the Comté of Toulouse, several trongholds, Domme, Montfort, Castelnaud and then Beynac, abandoned by their defenders, fell rapidly into the hands of the Crusaders. But Castelnaud alone among them was not dismantled, and was even provided with a garrison since it was considered to be the safest.
